Create Your Powerful Identity
Let's say you wish to excel in the art of painting. Or open your own woodworking business. Or become a Filmmaker which I did many years ago. The key is to utilize a Powerful Identity in reframing your Focus. Let's stick with painter for the moment.
Use the words: "I am a painter." The powerful use of the "I am..." phrase welds this new outlook to you mentally, intellectually but, more importantly, emotionally. Why emotionally? When you talk about painting (or any very exciting goal), then you can feel the electrical excitement within your body and Being.
"Being" is the act of existing within this newly embraced identity. Then you grow and become.

You can see my Pistol & Knife form at approximately 10:31 here in the video from 2010. This is at Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate where I have studied Kenpo Karate for approximately over 35 years. The form is one that I created to advance in the system, utilizing Kenpo Karate principles. I use the form with the primary weapon as the firearm, duly guarded and using the knife for close-in drills. This is the training the Warrior phase!

On the other hand, habits like procrastination can take a toll on our work and career.

I use an app called “Strides” which allows me a lot of specifics on my habits.
-Monday Through Sunday? Or Certain Days?
-How many times a day like…drinking water? Getting up from my desk?
-Trends - mental rewards for continuity
-Progress on my Habits.
They have them for both iphone and Android. I am just letting people know that this app has been one of the most useful purchases I've ever made to give me easy access, tracking, accountability and even a certain 'gamify' of my positive habit building.
Using my Habit Forming App on my phone (there are a bunch out there), I discovered a few things to pass along.
1. Good feedback to ‘earn’ the little green dot which means I filled my obligation for the day or week.
2. Watch how high I am setting the bar. I vowed initially to drink 8 classes of water a day. I felt like I was swimming. I used my sense of perspective in doing martial arts. Learn Short Form 1 in the first week and don’t do Long 7 until 30 years later. In other words, succeed at a doable ‘shorter’ habit and build up.
3. Showing up. We've all been there; setting the same goals, month after month and year after year. Building lasting habits doesn't have to be an endless struggle. In fact, I think success lies in just showing up consistently and with a perpetual sense of progress - no matter how small it may be - to add another brick towards the cathedral you are trying to build. I’ve heard people say that “half of success is just showing up.” So on a few items, I am doing 2x a week and not every day.
4. Patience with myself. See all the above.
5. Make it fun. Where is the fun factor? That’s why people succeed at winning games. So I make the ‘spacing of my new habits a bit of a game.’ I am able to combine weightlifting (hand weights) with a review of French words on my Babbel language app. Mon Dieu!
So the ‘combo’ new habit is a Two-fer !
6. Adjust adjust adjust. Over Ambitious may not kill the new habit but it can for me kill the start of the new habit. It’s all going to add up.
